Fairmont, on the north central region of the state, is a college town with a historic downtown, heritage on display at several historic sites such as Pricketts Fort State Park and plenty of outdoor fun at area parks.
History runs deep in the Fairmont area with Prickett's Fort State Park a main attraction. The fort, originally built in 1774, was reconstructed in 1976. Costumed interpreters present 18th century life to visitors through craft demonstrations. A restored home and museum are on site. Boating and picnicking are available at this 200-acre park located two miles from town. Fairmont State University preserves a one-room school museum on campus, honoring the college's earliest role as a private teacher-training school.
Outdoor recreation includes Coal Country Miniature Golf, a par-three course with a coal mine theme and Valley Worlds of Fun, a family entertainment center. Valley Falls State Park is a day park offering fishing, picnicking and 18 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails.
Fairmont's dining options include sandwiches and soup at the Classics Caf‚; 50s atmosphere at the Poky Dot diner and fine dining at the Aquarium Lounge. Fairmont State University offers art exhibits, concerts and theatre presentations. Sagebrush Round-up presents live country music every Saturday night.
Fairmont is located about two hours northeast of Charleston, WV. Take I-79 north to Exit 137.
