Bluefield, West Virginia Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

Sitting astride the West Virginia/Virginia state line, Bluefield is a twin city with the lofty East River Mountain forming the border. Named for the area's blue chicory, the town is naturally "air-conditioned" due to its altitude of one-half mile above sea level. Coal heritage is big here as evidenced by the town's nickname "Smokeless Coal Fields Capital of West Virginia". This small college town has an arts center, a downtown historic district of Victorian-era buildings and plenty of outdoor recreation.

Bluefield Arts Center, located in the "old city hall", features an art gallery, restaurant and theatre. The town is an area shopping destination with Mercer Mall plus small area shops and antique malls. Buddy's Country Store & Museum, open by appointment, depicts a coal camp store of the past.

Bluefield's dining options are diverse with popular local ethnic restaurants and chain sit-down restaurants. A popular area chain restaurant, Macado's, is located at the mall and serves a full menu in a uniquely historic but college-town atmosphere. Entertainment options include three nightclubs, live music at Sister's Coffee House and concerts or plays at Bluefield State College.

The Bluefield Orioles, a minor league baseball team, play each summer at Bluefield City Park. The town is home to four golf courses. Pinnacle Rock State Park, seven miles northwest of town, features a 250-acre day-use park, 15-acre lake and unique sandstone formations. Picnicking, fishing and hiking are popular. Nearby Bluestone Wildlife Management Area offers camping, boating, canoeing, fishing and hiking.

Bluefield is located about 110 miles south of Charleston, WV, on the West Virginia/ Virginia state line. Take I-64 to I-77 south to Bluefield.
